Elwin LyonDrawing and painting are Elwin’s way of depicting the uniqueness and beauty of each man’s psychology. Through it she expresses her interpretation of the emotions behind facial expressions and body language, the personality as a whole, analogies and metaphors to human nature, which she seeks to discover and capture in every art work. Elwin’s goal finds definition from the great artist Leonardo da Vinci ------- “A good painter is to paint two things, namely man and the working of man’s mind. " She is Expressionist-Fauvist ------- having concepts, compositions, colors, brush and palette knife renderings evoking the intensity and complexity of the mind.
Born Mary Elwin Caparas De Jesus in 1985, Elwin is a graduate of B.S. Psychology from Far Eastern University, Manila and a Registered Psychometrician. From her lineage, National Artist Carlo J. Caparas (comics writer & illustrator; movie director & producer), and Jose Corazon De Jesus, a.k.a. “ Huseng Batute “ (renowned Filipino writer and poet), are where she feels she got her share of innate passion for the humanities. She uses her father's middle name, Lyon, for her artist name.
A native Pasigueña, her maternal ancestors could be traced back as far as having lived in Pasig City since the Spanish colonial era. Though having no formal training in visual arts, her passion and collaboration with the supportive and knowledgeable colleagues in the Pasig Art Club, Inc. (est.1957) and other established Filipino painter friends served as her springboard to the visual art realm. Since 2009, she has joined several group art exhibitions in art galleries and museums, has done commissioned portraits and has been part of civic programs, projects and activities with relation to art. She won 4th place (finalist) in the 2011 Cebu National Painting Competition, spearheaded by painter Romulo "Mulong" Galicano.
