Julius DimanligJulius Dimanlig, a Philippine born painter, immigrated to the United States when he was ten years old. Studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, but after 18 years living abroad, returned to the Philippines to continue his studio practice. Currently he is a Photography instructor for out-of-school youth at a development
center (YDC) in his own neighborhood of Pasig. He organizes for the Pasig Art Club, initiating workshops, curating exhibits and perpetuating fellowship among artist collectives. Wittingly crafting urban fragments - objects, landscapes, and portraits of the Filipinos- Julius Dimanlig’s abstract expressions - prints, montages, and paintingsrevisits sentiments of survival, long after imperialists schemes took turns to control the Philippines. He suggests culture has the ability naturally bounce back, but reveals a sublime innocence and fragility. He voices an unspoken truth that lies deep within the complex layers of our social consciousness. His semiotics shifts between the layers of organically juxtaposed images invoking the unexpected. Making decisions by chance and displacement, similar to jazz improvisation, he seizes the raw and unrefined. Also, his use of luminescents highlight an unusual dream spectrum of Surrealism –the play of consciousness, time and space. It’s a common misconception that in dreams we can circumvent away from realities but Julius uses this dimension as an alternative platform to surface the turbulent present. |
