Pasig Art Club came into existence at the time when the Philippines was enjoying political independence but its culture and economy were still very much in tandem with America. However, a cultural reawakening was astir and there were efforts to integrate western modernism to Filipino values, art and culture. Fernando Amorsolo, Botong Francisco, Guillermo Tolentino and other famous artists of that time frequently interacted with each other at the Pasig atelier of Ambrosio Morales, professor of sculpture at the UP School of Fine Arts. Prof. Morales thereafter invited the young professional artists of Pasig, including fresh graduates from the school where he teaches, into the circle. These informal gatherings of artists progressed into sketching trips in Manila and Rizal bay towns that lasted several days every time. It was not long when the group thought of turning the artistic fellowship into serious meetings where the concept of forming an art club blossomed. It was in this milieu that Pasig Art Club was born. |
